SUMMARY:Jim Morrison Celebration featuring Wild Child
DESCRIPTION:Wild Child – Dave Brock’s Doors Experience is the Los Angeles based act with over 20 solid years of world tour experience and has flourished in the competitive L.A. Music Scene. Faithfully re-creating a live Doors Concert on stage\, the music is painstakingly reproduced and combined with the voice; look and essence of Jim Morrison live on stage (performed by lead singer Dave Brock). Wild Child tries to mirror the depth\, energy and emotion of The Doors concerts as they were live back in the late 1960’s. The Band also utilizes the same musical instruments live as The Doors did over 40 years ago. Wild Child performs internationally\, playing to packed venues around the globe.  Front man\, Dave Brock\, started his role as the Lizard King by grabbing the lead in the” Jim Morrison Rock Opera\,” produced by the late legends sister\, Anna Morrison Graham. Anna personally selected Brock for the part. From there\, he started the band “Wild Child\,” whose reputation rapidly spread from Southern California to remote areas of the world. Wild Child’s first show at The Whisky a-Go-Go was on July 3rd\, 1986. A long string of sell out shows at The Whisky has continued for Wild Child to this date. Wild Child broke right into the national act venue circuit\, and continues to play across the country and abroad to packed touring act venues. The band relies on stage craft and musicianship to create an event that people will remember\, without corn ball antics and pretentious banter. This is a serious\, touring re-creation stage show!  Two years ago the band produced “Wild Child – Live In Concert” a 22 song double disc CD set of songs that The Doors made popular on stage as well as songs from their last album that they were never able to perform live with Jim Morrison\, due to his unexpected death. Below is what one expert said about the CD set:  [Wild Child’s live CD] has been in production for over a year as lead singer David Brock has sought perfection on each and every song. I honestly think that this recording could get passed off to even a seasoned collector as being a new unheard Doors live show from the 1960’s. It’s the most incredible re-creation that I have ever heard”   (Kerry Humpherys – The Doors Collectors Magazine)

SUMMARY:Molotov: 20th Years Tour
DESCRIPTION:The rap-metal band Molotov formed in 1995 in Mexico City\, comprising singer/guitarist Tito Fuentes\, bassists Mickey “Huidos” Huidobro and Javier de la Cueva\, and a drummer known as La Quesadillera. By 1996\, Paco Ayala had replaced de la Cueva and Randy “El Gringo Loco” Ebright became the band’s new drummer. Molotov’s 1997 debut LP Donde Jugaran Las Ninas? was a hit with both Spanish- and English-speaking audiences\, earning a Grammy nomination for best Latin rock-alternative performance. The remix collection Molomix followed a year later\, and in 1999 the group returned with Apocalypshit\, produced and recorded by Mario Caldato\, Jr. (the Beastie Boys). Two and a half years later\, Molotov followed with their third album Dance and Dense Denso.

SUMMARY:Scar Symmetry
DESCRIPTION:Just when you think a genre has exhausted its possibilities\, when a certain style of metal has hit the wall of mediocrity\, along comes a band to jolt life back into it. Hailing from Sweden a mecca for melodic death metal and on a quest to pioneer their own form of that well-established genre\, SCAR SYMMETRY proved to be an exceptional gathering of talents able to produce an eccentric mixture of metal that can only be described as an intoxicating\, modern hybrid of melodic death metal. Encapsulating everything each band member loves about metal harmony\, melody\, brutality\, exceptional songwriting\, complex instrumentation – this union of Yin/Yang elements lent itself to SCAR SYMMETRYs blueprint of amalgamation in their quest to make unbridled music devoid of borders. \nFor their debut album\, SCAR SYMMETRY entered Kjellgrens own Black Lounge Studio to record and self-produce Symmetric In Design in three months. Featuring artwork by Pr Johansson\, the lyrics tackled mystical & cosmic themes such as astral projection\, reincarnation\, and dark prophecies of a dystopian future. Showcasing ambient vocal harmonies\, striking & intricate transitions\, and a deeply rooted spirit of experimentation in all twelve tracks\, SCAR SYMMETRY created one of 2005s buried treasures\, as Symmetric In Design went on to place in multiple end-of-the-year lists among the metal press under various categories: Best Debut Album\, Best of 2005\, and Bands You Should Know. Vocalist Christian lvestam demonstrated all the signs of multiple personality disorder with his Mikael kerfeldt-styled guttural death growls\, his higher\, sadistic register similar to Hypocrisys Peter Tgtgren\, and ultimately unleashing an emotionally clean voice bordering on the likes of AOR-styled rock. A standout first effort\, hailed AllMusic.com\, while Outburn Magazine praised: Complete with amazing guitar work\, dark symphonic synthetic ambience\, and bone-crushing thrash-heavy grooves\, SCAR SYMMETRY reaches into little-charted territory to capture the imagination. \nWith less than eight months between releases\, SCAR SYMMETRYs ambition seeks to flex its muscular and melodic aggression once again with Pitch Black Progress. Featuring the same stellar cast from their debut album\, this sophomore effort proves they have created a dominion of inherent diversity where THEY control the extremes. Re-entering Black Lounge Studio (owned and run by Kjellgren\, who comes from a family lineage of professional musicians) with their no-holds-barred approach to music making\, SCAR SYMMETRY dive deep into their collective subconscious and resurface to unveil another sonic tapestry of astoundingly versatile textures. With the aim to resurrect the awe in their listeners\, The Illusionist\, Slaves To The Subliminal\, The Kaleidoscopic God\, Calculate The Apocalypse\, and Retaliator all exemplify lvestams extreme range (which takes you between fearsome death growls & blissfully clean vocals and back again)\, Kjellgren & Nilssons tricky fretwork & heroic\, prog-infused guitar solos\, Seils precise bass lines\, and Ohlssons exacting drum work. Every track converges into a pinnacle of raw talent that flourishes with its expression. \nThe genre of melodic death has received another mighty gift from Sweden by way of Pitch Black Progress. Featuring artwork by Anthony Clarkson (Hypocrisy\, Exodus) and encompassing the viciousness of Edge Of Sanity\, the melody of Soilwork\, the intricacies of Into Eternity\, and the experimentation of Voivod\, SCAR SYMMETRY successfully merges seemingly incongruous extremities to exude a sonic vision of continual expansion. While its true that no one goes unscathed when dealing with the cruelties in this world\, misery does indeed enjoy company!

SUMMARY:An Evening with Little Feat
DESCRIPTION:In his preface to a recent Little Feat retrospective compilation\, the band’s Paul Barrere wrote\, ”It’s almost 33 years ago exactly since Mr. [Lowell] George came to the front door of the Laurel Canyon house I was livin’ in\, with that beautiful white ”p“ bass in hand\, and asked if I wanted to try out as bass player for his new band. As most who know the story’s end can tell you\, as a bassist I make an excellent guitarist\, and 3 years later– when I finally began my stint in Little Feat– I would never have guessed that I would be here writing these liner notes to yet another chapter in the now storied life of a band that has been my life\, and a true labor of love.“ \nTruth is\, there really is no story’s end yet\, and Little Feat have indeed led a storied life ever since they formed in 1969. From then on\, their unconventional signature of earthy\, organic appeal and polished\, first-rate musicianship wrapped around eclectic and memorable songs–clearly delivered as an authentic labor of love–has been a lasting fixture on the musical landscape. As American as apple pie–and rock ‘n roll itself–Feat’s music transcends boundaries\, a freewheeling fusion of California rock and Dixie-inflected funk-boogie. In the mix as well are strains of folk\, blues\, rockabilly\, country and jazz\, inventing a hybrid sound that is truly Little Feat’s own. \nThat story is about to add a major new chapter – the 2008 release of Join the Band\, a very special project in Feat’s history. Keyboardist Bill Payne came up with the idea of a CD that included many things\, but featured major Little Feat hit songs as played by a band that included Feat and some very special friends. When you have friends like Jimmy Buffett\, Dave Matthews\, Emmylou Harris\, Bob Seger\, Bela Fleck\, Brooks and Dunn\, Chris Robinson (Black Crowes)\, Vince Gill\, Mike Gordon (Phish)\, and Inara George (band founder Lowell’s daughter) – you have musical treasure in your hands. Join the Band is going to make some noise. \nEasily one of the hardest working bands in show biz\, today’s Little Feat is a seven-member powerhouse that ably carries on the group’s tradition in both the recording and touring arenas. Their most recent studio album is Kickin’ It At The Barn\, produced by Feat-ers Paul Barrere\, Bill Payne and Fred Tackett. It’s named after the place it was recorded throughout 2003\, Tackett’s barn-come-studio in Topanga Canyon\, which Bill Payne has called ”Little Feat’s version of The Band’s ‘Big Pink’\,“ and which lent an invaluable ambience to the undertaking. In his liner notes\, faithful Feat scribe Paul Barrere writes\, ”If music is a conversation between the players\, then we are talking like never before…this has been truly one of the most memorable recording projects we’ve done. We started with an idea to write songs on acoustic guitar and piano\, like the old days before computers and samples\, and then let the band interpret the music.“ \nFeat’s story began in 1969 when songwriter\, performer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and all around colorful character Lowell George\, formerly of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention\, set out to form his own band — at Zappa’s suggestion. The brilliant and often idiosyncratic George connected with keyboard master Bill Payne\, and\, along with drummer Richie Hayward and Roy Estrada\, founded Little Feat. They were soon signed to Warner Bros.\, where Little Feat\, in various configurations\, would remain for twelve of their sixteen albums. \nThis initial line-up recorded the band’s first two LPs–their rootsy\, 1971 self-titled debut\, featuring the classic cut ”Willin\,“ and its follow-up\, Sailin’ Shoes\, which added ”Easy To Slip\,“ ”Trouble\,“ ”Tripe Face Boogie\,“ ”Cold Cold Cold“ and the infectious title track to their repertoire. Upon Estrada’s departure in 1972\, Paul Barrere\, Sam Clayton and Kenny Gradney (all still in Feat today) signed on\, and the rest\, as they say\, is history…and many more great albums. \nNext up was Dixie Chicken (’73)\, a New Orleans-influenced gumbo of greatness that offered up the signature title track and ”Fat Man In The Bathtub\,“ among other delights. The two LPs that followed\, Feats Don’t Fail Me Now (’74) and The Last Record Album (’75) served up ”Rock & Roll Doctor\,“ ”Oh\, Atlanta\,“ and ”All That You Dream\,“ respectively\, while 1977’s Time Loves a Hero offered up\, in fine Feats fashion\, another unforgettable title track. That same year delivered the aforementioned Waiting For Columbus\, forever memorializing their legendary stage prowess. \nDuring Little Feat’s recording of their eighth album as a group\, 1979’s Down On The Farm\, founding member Lowell George—who had already been veering towards solo work– met a tragic and untimely passing. Except for Hoy\, Hoy\, a 1981 full-length assemblage of rarities\, live performances\, previously overlooked tracks\, and a new song apiece from Payne and Barrere\, Little Feat disbanded until the mid-‘80s. At that point\, their own lyrics from ”Hangin’ On To The Good Times Here\,“ ”…although we went our own ways\, we couldn’t escape from where we came\, so we find ourselves back at the table again\, telling stories of survivors and friends\,“ proved very telling. Barrere and Payne remember that a chance jam session in 1986 brought them together again\, when they were reminded of how deeply Little Feat’s music was ingrained in them. \nIn 1988\, the reformed band—with new members Craig Fuller (handling George’s vocal duties) and Fred Tackett–rekindled Feat’s magic for fans old and new alike. That year\, they released the lively reunion album Let It Roll\, and the singles ”Hate To Lose Your Lovin’\,“ and\, of course\, the title track. The 1989 follow-up\, Representing The Mambo\, would prove to be their last for Warner Bros. Next came 1991’s Shake Me Up (on Morgan Creek)\, after which Fuller departed the band. Little Feat added a new lead singer\, Shaun Murphy\, in 1993\, and released an acclaimed studio album\, Ain’t Had Enough Fun in 1995 (this time on Zoo). Shaun was with Little Feat from 1993 to 2009. Shaun’s feminine energy and powerful\, seasoned\, bluesy vocalizations certainly upped the fun quotient for a recharged Little Feat. \nThis incarnation of the band was captured live to great effect on ‘96’s Live From Neon Park\, a two-CD set culling performances from multiple concert venues including San Francisco’s fabled Fillmore Auditorium\, Portland\, Oregon’s Roseland Ballroom\, and House of Blues Sunset Strip. Named after the renowned album cover artist whose striking images gracing Little Feat’s releases was a time-honored tradition (until his death from ALS in 1993)\, this live-fest featured all the band’s best-loved songs as well as their contemporary material. The collection proved how vital they remained after all the changes time had wrought. \nIn 1998\, Little Feat released Under The Radar\, their first album on CMC International. Spotlighting a confident and well-oiled configuration of first-rate talents\, Under The Radar delivered a consistently strong set of songs including new Feat favorites ”Home Ground\,“ ”Eden’s Wall\,“ and ”Calling The Children Home.“ With 2000’s Chinese Work Songs\, also on CMC\, Little Feat’s ever-evolving repertoire grew even more\, featuring original compositions including ”Marginal Creatures\,“ ”Eula\,“ and ”Another Sunday\,“ as well as vibrant covers of Bob Dylan\, The Band and Phish songs. \nReleased in October 2003\, Kickin’ It At The Barn adds to the ever-growing repertoire on the band’s very own Hot Tomato Records. ”It’s something we’ve talked about doing for a long time\,“ says founding Feat-er Payne of launching the label\, adding\, ”it gives us the chance to do what we want\, and it’s there for everybody in the band… and when it’s really up and running\, for other artists too.“ In a perfect synergy of saluting their vibrant past and christening the untold future\, Hot Tomato kicked-off in June ’02 with the inaugural releases Raw Tomatos and Ripe Tomatos\, each a double-CD collection of live rarities spanning over three decades. Tracks were culled from a wealth of tapes amassed over the years from both fans and band sources alike\, with each collection boasting well over two hours of music—they are only the first in what promises to be a Hot Tomato tradition of creatively mining the band’s inexhaustible archives. \nOther Hot Tomato releases include the 2002 two-CD set Live From The Ram’s Head\, capturing a 2001 acoustic show recorded in Annapolis\, MD\, and ‘03’s Down Upon The Suwannee\, a live recording captured at the Magnolia Festival in Live Oak\, Florida. The title\, which is also a tip of the hat to Stephen Foster\, refers to the Suwannee River\, which flows through the concert site. \nFred Tackett’s solo album In A Town Like This came out in 2003 as well\, and plans are in the works to release discs from various band members in the future\, including a second Paul Barrere/Fred Tackett album\, among other projects. Bill Payne finally got on the solo bandwagon with 2004’s Cielo Norte (Northern Sky)\, a marriage of the various types of keyboard\, from synthesizers to acoustic piano\, that is at times atmospheric\, impassioned\, and lyrical\, and always intimate. Any CD that takes its inspiration from Yo Yo Ma\,\, Bill Evans\, and John Fahey covers an elegant span of musical territory. \nYet another present day acknowledgement of Little Feat’s rich legacy is Rhino’s deluxe 25th anniversary edition of the band’s monumental concert LP Waiting for Columbus\, released in 2002 as an expanded two-CD set with extensive new liner notes and rare photos. When it first came out in 1977\, Waiting For Columbus instantly became one of the all-time great live rock ‘n roll albums\, serving up bringin’-down-the-house versions of a host of Feat favorites including ”Dixie Chicken\,“ ”Fat Man In the Bathtub\,“ ”Time Loves A Hero\,“ ”Sailin’ Shoes\,“ ”Oh Atlanta\,“ and ”Willin’.“ The new package restores the full 17-song sequence of the original concert\, and adds seven previously unreleased outtakes. In October 2002\, Little Feat commemorated Rhino’s re-release–and the unforgettable musical event that inspired it– with a benefit concert at Washington\, D.C.’s Lisner Auditorium\, one of the two venues where Waiting For Columbus was recorded. An all-star guest line-up including Jackson Browne\, Stephen Bruton\, Joe Ely\, Bela Fleck\, Levon Helm\, Sonny Landreth\, and Billy Bob Thornton helped the band celebrate. \nRhino/Warner Bros. also saluted Little Feat’s accumulated musical history with the comprehensive retrospective Hotcakes & Outtakes: 30 Years of Little Feat\, a project initiated and co-produced by Bill Payne and Paul Barrere. Released in 2000\, the deluxe 4-CD\, 83-track boxed set features hits from all of Little Feat’s classic albums as well as fan favorites\, alternate takes and hand-picked rarities from the band’s eventful past. \nTime has loved these musical heroes for more than three decades now\, as have legions of fans and countless fellow musicians\, many of whom they’ve played with over the years. Feat’s fabled collaborators have included Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, Beck\, Brian Wilson\, Bonnie Raitt\, Robert Plant\, John Lee Hooker\, Johnny Lang\, and Leftover Salmon (for whom Bill Payne recently produced an album). With the success of Hot Tomato Records\, an endeavor powered by an inspired band of musicians continuing to create exciting new material both individually and as a group\, Little Feat will no doubt be sailin’ into the future with no end in sight.

SUMMARY:Sammy Adams
DESCRIPTION:Boston’s Sammy Adams caused quite a stir in 2010 when his debut album topped the online hip-hop charts the week of its release. Samuel Adams Wisner was a senior at Trinity College in Hartford when he decided to inject some attitude into Asher Roth’s hit “I Love College.” With the results posted online under the name Sam Adams\, his answer song\, “I Hate College\,” made the rapper an Internet star in 2009. \nOn the strength of his independently released album “Boston’s Boy\,” and mixtapes like “Party Records” and “Into the Wild\,” Sammy built through touring colleges and clubs across the country\, and signed with RCA Records in 2012. Since then\, the singer\, songwriter\, and producer has been in the studio with such collaborators as Pharrell Williams\, Ryan Tedder\, Mike Posner\, Bei Maejor\, Supa Dups\, Afrojack\, Matty Trump\, and Vinylz\, and others\, working on his debut album. \n“Pharrell gave me the best advice about making an album\,” Adams says. “He said\, ‘Just be in the moment with your songs because if you try to write a song to be a hit two months from now\, the culture can change.’ I’m really just trying to be true to myself and carve out my own lane. That’s what all my favorite artists have done.” \nIt’s with that joy and energy that Adams approaches his career as a pop artist. “I want to make music that’s universal\, that anyone can relate to\,” he says. “I’ve had my biggest success so far with pop songs and it has inspired me to write super-catchy hooks that people can jump up and down to. It feels authentic to where I am creatively at this point and I’m excited to continue to explore and play with this kind of music.”

SUMMARY:Billy Talent
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve seen the video on YouTube\, you can’t help but marvel at the sight of over 100\,000 fans singing along to “Viking Death March\,” the first track released to the public from Billy Talent’s fourth album\, Dead Silence. Watching the mass celebration of this song is powerful enough but the fact that the track had only been released days before the band hit the stage at the Rock Am Ring festival in Germany is testament to the loyalty of the band’s fans around the world. \nDead Silence is the follow up to Billy Talent I\, II and III and was recorded in three different studios in Toronto\, Vancouver and Los Angeles. The album was produced by Billy Talent guitarist Ian D’Sa and is perfect proof for Billy Talent’s inner strength\, their focus and hard work ethic; character traits that have turned them into one of the most successful international rock acts of the past decade. Being together for almost 20 years and having travelled thousands of miles in vans\, buses and planes turned the four piece not just into a band\, but into a family — a tight brotherhood that will challenge and tackle any obstacle in front of them. Equipped with countless awards (such as multiple MuchMusic Awards\, Juno Awards\, MTV Awards and even two of those rare German Echo Awards) and having played the biggest festival stages worldwide\, Billy Talent are ready to take on their next mission: to complete their world domination.

SUMMARY:The Robert Cray Band
DESCRIPTION:“You gotta keep your ears open and expand your mind.” \n– Robert Cray \nOpen ears and an open mind are the essence of singer\, guitarist and songwriter Robert Cray’s approach to writing\, recording and playing music. He has created a sound that rises from American roots and arrives today both fresh and familiar. In just over 40 years Cray and his band have recorded 20 studio releases\, 15 of which have been on the Billboard charts\, and played bars\, concert halls\, festivals and arenas around the world. There are five Grammys with Cray’s name on them\, and he has a suitcase full of W.C. Handy blues awards. Four years ago Cray was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. \nOn August 28 the Mascot Label Group will celebrate the vibrancy of the Cray Band’s rocking rootsy blues\, soul-filled ballads and timeless R&B with the release of 4 Nights of 40 Years Live. Through clips of concerts from the 80s and four recent shows\, the evolution from the Cray Band unfolds. Comments by Cray and band members add depth. And interviews with Eric Clapton\, Keith Richards\, Bonnie Raitt\, Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy put the band in perspective. The 3- piece set will be available in a variety of formats – 2 LPs + Mp3\, 2 CDs + DVD\, Blu-Ray + 2 CDs and digitally. \nGrowing up in the Northwest\, Robert Cray listened to the gospel of the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi\, Bobby Bland’s soul\, Jimi Hendrix’s rock guitar and the Beatles pop sounds. He would bring all of the influences into play throughout his career\, but his teenage band was captivated by Southern Soul and the blues. “In the early days of the band we were getting back into O.V. Wright and paying attention to my favorite blues players; Buddy Guy\, Otis Rush\, Albert King and especially Albert Collins\,” Cray says. \nThe Texas-born blues guitarist known as Master of the Telecaster\, Albert Collins\, sealed the deal on the Cray Band’s early direction. The musical highlight of Cray’s senior year was his class voting to bring Collins in to play a graduation party. \nThe glow of a career in music began when Cray was a teen\, and in 1974 it burst into flames as the Robert Cray Band came together in Eugene\, Oregon. How strong was the fire? “Richard and I didn’t own a vehicle\, and we were staying with his girlfriend in Eugene. We hitched a ride to Salem\, where our drummer Tom Murphy was going to school\, to rehearse\,” Cray recalls. \nWith the group’s 1980 debut release\, Who’s Been Talkin’\, word about the Cray Band began to spread across the Northwest and down in to California. Playing packed bars and roadhouses the Cray Band was thrilling. Yes\, fans could hear an Albert Collins guitar riff and a Howlin’ Wolf song but the sound was present. Blues and soul fans showed up religiously\, but those steamy raucous sets also drew crowds whose tastes in music ranged from rock to funk and jazz. \nAlso among the Cray Band admirers were other musicians. John Lee Hooker put his appreciation into action. “The first time we played with Hooker was in Montana. We were opening the set and he was playing solo\,” Cray recalls. “We’d never met him before but he just walked on stage and started playing with us. We dug the hell out of the guy\, and after that we were friends.” \nThe Cray Band’s next two releases – Bad Influence and False Accusations – charted\, taking the four-piece’s sound across the airways and abroad. The group was on a roll\, but the players slept on couches. “We were just road rats\,” Cray says with a chuckle. “We’d take a break for two weeks to record\, then go back out. We didn’t have a house\, a home\, any of those responsibilities.” On one of those breaks Cray went into the studio with Collins and another great Texas guitarist and singer\, Johnny Clyde Copeland\, to record Showdown!\, a CD that has become essential to any 80s electric blues collection. \nIt was the sounds of the blues and soul that first drew attention from artists in the rock arena. In an interview on the DVD included in 4 Nights of 40 Years Live\, Eric Clapton gives his initial response to Robert Cray saying\, “As a blues fan\, we’re saved.” The Cray Band’s beginnings did bring the sounds of its mentors into the mainstream\, even taking the music of John Lee Hooker\, Etta James and Albert Collins to a larger\, younger audience. But no one knew how broad the band’s audience would be until the Cray Band opened the ears of rock radio programmers. With the 1986 release of Strong Persuader the Cray Band’s tunes were put in heavy rotation on mega rock stations across the nation. The first hit\, “Smoking Gun\,” was followed by “I Guess I Showed Her” and “Right Next Door (Because of Me).” The Cray Band’s next two releases\, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and Midnight Stroll\, brought more radio listeners to record stores\, increasing sales of the group’s CDs. \nFollowing the path of fame taken by blues-based rockers like Johnny Winter and Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Cray became a sensation\, leading his band in concerts at large arena and rock festival. He was the first African American artist since Jimi Hendrix to rise to such fame in rock music. Was there a change in the band’s direction or had the blues arrived again into the mainstream after more than three decades of being forgotten by radio? “We were doing blues and Rand B from the first\,” Crays says. “That’s just part of what we do. If you’re writing a tune it’s only natural to grab something from someplace else. You’re gonna put in some soul changes and some jazz\, something you’ve been listening to. With what we do there’s a whole lot of room to move. \nClapton’s admiration for Cray led to a writing collaboration on the hit “Old Love\,” which featured Cray on guitar. A call came from Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richard who asked him to be in the film he and Steve Jordan were producing about the rock guitarist Chuck Berry\, “Hail! Hail! Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Concert footage in the film features Richards\, Jordan\, Clapton\, Julian Lennon\, Linda Ronstadt and Etta James. Cray performs “Brown Eyed Handsome Man” with Berry. Dressed in a baby blue tuxedo jacket\, the young guitarist is the epitome of the tune’s title. Cray also performed on the Tina Turner TV special “Break Every Rule.” \nDuring the 90s the Cray Band was featured in concert with artists like Clapton\, the Stones\, John Lee Hooker\, BB King and Bonnie Raitt\, who on the DVD declares the band leader is “an original; he’s passionate\, he’s a bad ass and puts on one of the best shows you’ll ever see.” \nAmidst these accolades\, soaring record sales and a packed touring schedule the Cray Band recorded six CDs in the 90s. Cray produced Shame + A Sin\, which referenced his blues roots\, in 1993. It was followed by two more self-produced recordings\, Some Rainy Morning and Sweet Potato Pie. Recorded in Memphis and featuring the famed Memphis Horns Sweet Potato Pie was the Cray Band’s most soulful album to date. The next recording Take Off Your Shoes delved even deeper into Memphis sounds of the 60s. “That was definitely a soul record\,” Cray says. “I’d already been writing songs\, Jim (Pugh\, who was keyboards with the Cray Band from 1989 to 2014) was writing songs\, leaning toward soul. Steve (Jordan\, producer) heard them and put the icing on the cake.” Jordan\, who subsequently produced the Cray Band’s In My Soul\, Shoulda Been Home and the first CD in 4 Nights of 40 Years Live\, also brought the personification of Memphis soul to the recording session\, Willie Mitchell\, to help with arrangements for the Memphis Horns. Mitchell discovered and first recorded Al Green along with other Southern Soul singers like Ann Peebles\, O.V. Wright and Syl Johnson for the famed Memphis label Hi Records. When he arrived at the Cray recording session\, he brought not only the Memphis presence but also a present. “Willie came over – he was wearing a gold jacket – and gave me this song\, ‘Love Gone to Waste\,’” Cray says. “Then we put some final touches on the CD at his studio in Memphis. It was a great opportunity to see Willie in the studio.” \nBoth on Take Your Shoes Off and 4 Nights of 40 Years Live\, “Love Gone to Waste” showcases Robert Cray’s natural ease with soul ballads. He is intense but smooth in telling the story of love gone bad. Then in a falsetto voice he soars through the sadness into the inevitable pain. It is a song that Cray owns because no other singer has dared try to do it justice. Take Your Shoes Off won a Grammy in 2000. \nIn the next decade the Cray Band recorded seven CDs\, three of them live\, and two – Twenty and This Time – were nominated for Grammys. The group’s most recent recordings\, Nothing But Love and In My Soul put the band back on the Billboard Charts. \nThe multimedia 4 Nights of 40 Years Live is a testament to the band’s longevity and vitality. The 80s concert footage is exuberant and shows the charisma of Young Bob (a reference in song that Cray makes to himself in homage to Muddy Waters calling himself Young Muddy) as a guitarist\, vocalist and band leader. The live performances at recent concerts capture seasoned musicians bringing a vivid\, illustrative past into the moment. Cray’s Stratocaster solos sing\, cry and take on the funk. His voice has grown richer and wiser yet remains sweet. \nIt is extraordinary for musicians to thrive over four decades\, and the Robert Cray Band is just that\, an extraordinary story of success. On the DVD Texas blues and R&B artist Jimmie Vaughan sums up Robert Cray’s singularity and success simply when he says\, “He’s got one foot in the future and one foot in the old stuff.”
