DESCRIPTION:In spite of the plethora of rap artists constantly emerging from Atlanta in the late 2000s\, B.o.B.\, who was only 17 when he signed his first major-label record deal\, was still unique. His borderline eccentricity and artistic mind\, belied by his music’s conventional Dirty South appeal\, raised his stock above the many copycat Southern up-and-comers and\, of course\, welcomed comparisons to OutKast and\, specifically\, their offbeat half\, André 3000. Although he grew up on the east side of Atlanta in Decatur\, Bobby Ray Simmons was born in North Carolina on November 15\, 1988. Creating music became an early hobby for the young talent\, who played trumpet and other instruments throughout grade school. By the time he was in high school\, he already had management and had formed a production duo called the Klinic. At age 15\, he even successfully sold a beat of his own to Slip-N-Slide recording artist Citty. When his partner left for college\, however\, B.o.B. decided to take the solo artist path and subsequently recorded the hazy\, spoken word-like ode to marijuana\, “Cloud 9.” \nIn 2006\, B.o.B.’s manager helped sneak him into Club Crucial (owned by Atlanta rap star T.I.)\, since he was underage\, and the teenaged MC wowed the audience with his self-produced ode. A part of that impressed crowd\, producer and industry veteran TJ Chapman agreed to co-manage B.o.B.\, which only a month later led to B.o.B.’s signing with Atlantic and subsidiary imprint Rebel Rock\, run by Florida producer Jim Jonsin (Lil Wayne\, Trick Daddy\, Jamie Foxx). His first single for Atlantic\, Haterz Everywhere (2007)\, showed lots of promise\, reaching the Top Five of Billboard’s Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart. Before long\, several outlets and publications\, including XXL\, Spin\, as well as MTV\, took notice of the Atlanta rapper\, running “Artist to Watch” features and tagging him as the next Atlanta rap artist to blow up nationally. B.o.B.’s second single\, “Grip Your Body\,” guested by British soul siren Amy Winehouse\, also fared well and preceded his 2008 debut album. DESCRIPTION:The singular Senegalese singer-guitarist-percussionist BAABA MAAL “has a gift\, nearly unparalleled in all of popular music\, for creating at once soaring and vulnerable melodies.” (NPR) Maal has become one of Africa’s greatest musical exports by fusing a range of styles into something completely original. \nBorn in Podor on the Senegal River\, Baaba Maal sings mainly in the Pulaar language and is the foremost promoter of the traditions of the Pulaar-speaking people\, who live in the ancient Senegalese kingdom of Futa Tooro. He studied traditional music with the blind Senegalese guitarist Mansour Seck\, a griot also from Podor\, and went on to form the group Daande Lenol\, with whom he released a number of albums. His storied career has been defined by innovation and experimentation; he has incorporated everything from ragga to salsa to Breton harp music into what has always been a signature sound\, at the center of which is his stunning voice. His 2016 record The Traveler (Palm / Marathon Artists) continues down this restless path. \nLAKOU MIZIK\, a rousing collective of Haitian musicians formed after the devastating 2010 earthquake\, offers “a joyous antidote to Haiti’s hard times.” (The Guardian) The group includes elder legends and rising young talents\, united in a mission to honor the healing spirit of their collective culture.

DESCRIPTION:If you ask the members of Balkan Beat Box to describe their sound you’ll get a different answer from each individual; you’ll also likely get a different answer from the individuals if you ask them the same question multiple times. This is partially because BBB’s contemporary cross-cultural musical polyglotism cavorts with many styles\, but this is also because the band doesn’t want to be tied to any one answer. They revel in the fact that their influences are worldwide and given equal value\, but this is no mere mash-up\, this is music made by citizens of a world culture. \nHailing from New York and Tel Aviv\, Balkan Beat Box (aka BBB) blend Balkan brass\, earth shattering bass\, hip-hop and dub electronics to exhilarating effect. Their live shows are explosive affairs\, with singer Tomer Yosef delivering his sometimes politicised lyrics with passionate performances always sending audiences into a frenzy. The result is an intoxicating and intense sonic assault which takes no prisoners and makes no apologies for its outspokenness. \nOri Kaplan\, Tamir Muskat\, and Tomer Yosef burst out of New York City’s underground in the mid-2000s introducing the world to their distinctive brand of music and setting BBB’s reputation as a formidable live act. They became a favorite of audiences and critics alike the world over. \nOver four albums the band have constantly explored new musical territory. They’ve visited the Balkan and Mediterranean diaspora of their namesake in 2005’s Balkan Beat Box\, 2007’s Nu Med\, the Far East with Blue Eyed Black Boy 2010\, and produced an exhilarating hybrid of electronic raga on Give 2012. The Independent has called them “deftly programmed global fusion” adding “a band I can’t wait to see live.” Give was widely celebrated in the press\, with Songlines saying: ‘BBB are as outspoken and uncompromising as ever. It’s hard to resist the album’s intensity’. \nRecently\, the band had an intense period of collaborating with other artists such as the Yemenite dance music group A-Wa who are currently hitting the festival circuit\, the turnt up rock group Loco Hot\, and writing with producers and songwriters around the world. And their horns have been making marks in samples in the pop music world. Balkan Beat Box has much new music in the works\, 2016 promises to be their best year yet!
