SUMMARY:Rusted Root
DESCRIPTION:“The Movement\, means a new work ethic to me – it’s going from the industrial age to the individual spiritual age. I feel everyone should devote all their actions to all that is love\, healing and pragmatic. We’re seeing the growing pains of this right now…the world is split…some people are fearful and fighting it with all their might… Rusted Root is trying to help with this…this is our movement!!” shares Rusted Root founder\, front man\, songwriter\, singer/guitarist Michael Glabicki. Having collaborated with one another for two decades\, Rusted Root\, has honed the perfect combination of musical intuition\, freedom and virtuosity\, which has allowed them to organically shape shift their music into their own distinct and undeniable vision. With eight albums under their belt\, over three million records sold worldwide and countless nights on the road\, Rusted Root\, transcends age\, generations\, cultures and musical styles. Their music has been featured in films like Ice Age\, Twister and Matilda\, TV shows like New Girl\, Ally McBeal\, Charmed and Chuck as well as recent Enterprise Rent-A-Car commercials. Bassist and vocalist Patrick Norman says\, “From the very first time we played music together\, I knew we had something special. The music and the enjoyment of creating and playing with one another I feel is the driving force behind this band.” The powerhouse ensemble’s sweat-inducing and hypnotic live performances have allowed them to tour alongside everyone from Santana\, Dave Matthews Band\, The Allman Brothers Band\, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page’s reunion tour and countless others. Rusted Root’s Shanachie debut\, The Movement (10/30/12)\, is an energized and poetic collection of originals that capture the Pittsburgh based unit at their best. Glabicki says\, ” The Movement is an extremely joyous recording with seriously deep undertones. It is a culmination of everything we have learned\, or have tried to learn\, over our entire career. It truly is a career record for us.” The Movement is a tribute to Rusted Root’s fans. “The title itself is a testament to the community surrounding our music\,” says vocalist and percussionist Liz Berlin. Rusted Root created the “Fortunate Freaks Unite! We Are Rusted Root” campaign\, a fan-funding campaign where fans contributed to the making of the album\, while receiving some cool opportunities with the band. Glabicki adds\, “Rusted Root is a state of mind shared and explored by many people- we are a community that supports one another.” \nThe Movement transports listeners though an array of emotional and musical terrain\, creating one seamless journey. “There is real space on this album\, you can hear the room\, us breathing\, laughing\, playing music together\,” says Liz. The pulsating\, cathartic and uninhibited “Monkey Pants” opens the CD. “I have these little dance moves I do on stage every night\,” confesses Liz. “I almost feel like a monkey puppet on a string when we play this song\, it’s like the groove pulls my body in very specific ways.” Glabicki adds\, “The song embraces our unique human animal- focusing on our ability to spiritualize\, sexualize\, and dream our own existence.” The album continues to entice with “Cover Me Up\,” which begins and ends with gorgeous guitar and percussion interplay and an enchanting Calypso and African vibe. Glabicki shares\, “The guitar work on this song is really extraordinary\, Colter Harper’s parts are beautifully layered with mine\, his many trips to Africa really show through on this song.” Glabicki’s and Liz’s vocals tease and slither through the melody as the band crescendos to a bluesy showdown. \nThe camaraderie\, sheer love for musical experimentation and a desire to break down musical boundaries comes full circle on “The Movement\,” the title track and first single. “Our drummer\, Preach Freedom came up with such an interesting drum pattern for the song and along with the tambourines\, foot stomps and claps\, it’s like nothing I’ve ever heard before\,” exclaims Glabicki. “It was really great having Lucy Stone singing background vocals with us on this one. She came up with a couple harmony ideas that I worked off of to create the vocal arrangement for the song\, it feels like exciting new territory for us.” Another highlight on The Movement is the rhythmically charged and scintillating “In Our Sun.” The trance-like rhythmic patterns and Sub-Saharan drenched chanting reach a fevered pitch and then fade like a mirage. \nLiz explains that the members of Rusted Root are drawn to and have explored virtually every form of music. “I am very inspired vocally by anything from Indian to African to Middle Eastern sounds and scales having grown up with a lot of Hebrew music” she says. Michael Glabicki’s cites the Bee Gees\, Elvis Costello\, Neil Young\, Tony Childs\, Black Keys\, Black Sabbath and various Afro Pop music as among his influences. Glabicki explains the song “In Our Sun” started out as an experiment and was created with several great Pittsburgh drummers. He was playing around with the song and started listening to it backwards; that’s where the fun began. “There’s an acoustic guitar that was used solely to record the drums through its magnetic pick up which caused the strings to ring out creating a drone effect which decided the key for the song. Since most of the vocals were then recorded on the tour bus you can hear the bus humming and rattling throughout the song too.”Glabicki’s vocals shine on the lilting ballad “Fossil Man\,” and on “Fortunate Freaks” Rusted Root lets it all go and rocks out hard with the song’s energizing bridge. “Sun And Magic” showcases dazzling guitar and bass lines that shimmer like a summer breeze. Glabicki’s signature Tremelo picking and acoustic-electric guitar amplification shine throughout The Movement. Rusted Root gets down right gritty on “Up And All Around” while “Something’s On My Mind” continues to solidify their place as one of the most versatile and innovative bands on the creative music scene. \n“I was in my first semester of college. I had just returned from a trip to the war torn country of Nicaragua and had come back very depressed. It was the physical type of depression where at times I couldn’t move my arms…I remember after one of those spells I picked up the guitar and wrote a song\,” recalls Glabicki. “I can remember feeling like I had lifted out of my dead body and I could move so freely. Shortly after that night I dropped out of college to start a band – my first real band – Rusted Root.” It was the early 90s and it wasn’t long before Rusted Root garnered a rabid fan base with their unique blend of roots music and world rock. Although they have toured the world\, the city of Pittsburgh still pulses through their veins. Patrick explains\, “Living in our hometown helps keep us grounded and focused.” Liz adds\, “Pittsburgh means so much to us as a band. The city\, the people\, the community are the womb where Rusted Root gestated\, birthed and has thrived all these years. It is the home we can always come back to.” Glabicki adds\, “Pittsburgh is home. It’s family. It is our protection. It’s the perfect place to create something original. Pittsburgh is full of working class hero’s.” In 1992 Rusted Root released Cruel Sun independently and two years later\, while signed to Mercury\, they released their platinum-selling breakthrough\, When I Woke\, which spawned the Top 40 hit “Send Me On My Way\,” that went on to chart on Billboard’s Hot 100. In 2004\, the band released the double album Rusted Root Live on their own Touchy Pegg label\, following the re-release of the newly re-mastered Cruel Sun in 2003. Rusted Root continued to tour relentlessly between the release of Cruel Sun and the 2009 release of Stereo Rodeo. \nNow with the release of The Movement\, the journey continues. Liz says\, “When we first got together as a band there was a groundswell of community\, love and support that has taken us on a movement through our lives and together as a band. This movement has never stopped all these years!” Glabicki concludes\, “I hope this music will help to lighten people’s load and elevate them!! Making this record was a lot more intense than any of our other recordings. It was the first time that I produced and engineered a Rusted Root recording. It kind of upped the ante for me\, there was no way I could step on eggshells and not be brutally honest\, it was do or die. We were blessed to work with some really great musicians and singers. It was also awesome having some of the Fortunate Freaks supporters visit the studio to get us out of any routine we might have been in. Our goal is to create a ritual with the fans\, something that is truly healing.” \nWhen Monty Python’s Eric Idle created the fictional band “Toad the Wet Sprocket” for the program “Rutland Weekend Television” in 1975\, he never dreamed that anyone would actually use such a silly name. Fast forward to 1986\, when four California teens desperately needed to come up with a name to call their band for an upcoming gig at a Goleta\, CA watering hole called The Shack. \nSince that day\, “Toad the Wet Sprocket” has been the name of the four piece California rock band consisting of lead singer Glen Phillips\, guitarist Todd Nichols\, bassist Dean Dinning\, and drummer Randy Guss. From 1989-1998\, they made 5 studio albums which combined sold over four million copies\, had five major radio hits\, and won over audiences across North America and Europe. \nAfter breaking up in 1998\, Toad would get together sporadically to play shows on a casual basis\, but their hard core fans never gave up hope for a new album. After successful tours in 2006-2010\, the band finally decided to put the last piece of the puzzle in place\, and committed to working together on new music. They also decided to update their classic catalog\, and created a new Greatest Hits album “All You Want”\, which came out in 2011. \nToad the Wet Sprocket’s current album New Constellation\, was launched with an impressive #3 most funded Kickstarter Campaign in music for the year\, was the bands’ first new album in 16 years when released in 2014\, and features the singles “New Constellation”\, “The Moment” and “California Wasted”.

DESCRIPTION:One of the most critically acclaimed bands of the last three decades\, 10\,000 Maniacs were founded by Robert Buck\, Dennis Drew\, Steven Gustafson\, John Lombardo and Natalie Merchant in the fall of 1981. Jerry Augustyniak joined in 1983. Together with artists like R.E.M. they defined college rock and created the first wave of alternative rock bands and what became know as the alternative rock format on FM radio. \nWriting and performing powerful\, danceable and socially conscious original material in and around their hometown of Jamestown\, New York the group toured extensively and produced two independently released records\, Human Conflict Number Five (’82) and Secrets of the I Ching (’83) on their own Christian Burial Music label. \nBy producing\, manufacturing and marketing their own recordings 10\,000 Maniacs were one of the original “indie” bands before signing with Elektra Records and making The Wishing Chair in 1985 with producer Joe Boyd (Fairport Convention\, Nick Drake\, REM). After touring extensively with REM and though out Europe John Lombardo left the band in July of 1986 and the band continued as a 5 piece. \nIn 1987 the Maniacs recorded and released In My Tribe. Produced by Peter Asher (James Taylor\, Linda Ronstadt) this album broke into the charts\, where it stayed 77 weeks\, peaking at #37 and selling over two million copies. In My Tribe featured the hit singles “Don’t Talk\,” “Hey Jack Kerouac\,” “Like The Weather” and “What’s The Matter Here?” It was voted one of the 100 most important releases of the decade by Rolling Stone Magazine. \n1988 saw the band debut on national television with appearances on The Tonight Show\, Late Night with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live. \nBlind Man’s Zoo\, the 1989 follow-up\, hit #13 on the Billboard charts and went platinum. It featured the hit singles\, “Trouble Me and “Eat For Two.” The following world tour featured several European festivals\, a string of US amphitheatres and the renowned Fourth of July concert with the Grateful Dead in front of 80\,000 in Buffalo NY. \nIn 1990 the band released a compilation of their first two independent recordings called Hope Chest: The Fredonia Recordings along with a companion video entitled Time Capsule. \nOur Time in Eden was released in 1992\, and featured the hit singles\, “Candy Everybody Wants” and “These Are Days” selling more than three million copies. Rolling Stone’s four-star review called it a “…gripping new album …with a provocative\, unnerving power.” \nA second Saturday Night Live appearance on Halloween ‘92\, preceded the Maniacs memorable performance at Bill Clinton’s MTV Inaugural Ball where host Dennis Miller famously referred to them as “Chelsea Clinton’s favorite band”. \n10\,000 Maniacs has the added distinction of launching the career of singersongwriter Natalie Merchant\, best known for her successful 1995 solo album Tigerlily (Elektra). \nMTV Unplugged was released a few months after her departure\, featuring a remake of the classic\, “Because the Night.” The record sold 4 million copies. \n10\,000 Maniacs continued without Merchant\, bringing back John Lombardo and adding Mary Ramsey in 1994. \nIn November 1995\, the Maniacs played dates in Cleveland and Chicago. The Cleveland Plain Dealer remarked of their Agora Ballroom show: “The band showed a sold-out crowd the path to its surprisingly smooth and viable rebirth…Saddled with the unenviable task of filling Merchant’s shoes\, Ramsey brilliantly rose to the occasion” \nThe new lineup released Love Among the Ruins for Geffen Records in 1997\, featuring a cover of Roxy Music’s “More Than This\,” which went to #24 on the Billboard charts\, the highest-charting single in the band’s history. \nThe Chicago Tribune noted “If the 11 new singles rolled out are any indication of things to come\, the new incarnation of 10\,000 Maniacs may eclipse the old” and the Chicago Sun Times simply said\, “Natalie Who?” \n10\,000 Maniacs continued their grinding touring schedule\, finding new fans in Mexico\, Portugal and Brazil. \nIn 1999\, the band released The Earth Pressed Flat on Bar/None. An Album that Angelfire.com called “…arguably 10\,000 Maniacs’ greatest achievement\, the perfect post-punk Celtic folk rock album.” \nIn December of 2000 founding member Robert Buck died at the age of 42. After a three-year hiatus the Maniacs returned in 2003 with long time friend and former guitar tech Jeff Erickson on lead guitar. \nIn 2004\, Elektra/Asylum/Rhino Records released Campfire Songs: The Popular\, Obscure and Unknown Recordings\, a two CD set compilation featuring a broad array of their groundbreaking music including several unreleased tracks. \nIn 2013 10\,000 Maniacs released their first full-length album in 13 years. Music From The Motion Picture\, was hailed as a beautiful affirmation of the band’s classic poetic lyrics and dreamy Americana blend. The independent release was crowd-funded through Pledgemusic\,com \nToday finds the band approaching their 33rd anniversary and hard at work on a new album\, Twice Told Tales\, a collection of traditional folk songs from the British Isles slated for release in early 2015. The album is their second venture in crowd funding through Pledgemusic.com.

SUMMARY:The Bangles
DESCRIPTION:It was over 30 years ago that guitarists Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson and drummer Debbi Peterson formed the Bangles in a Brentwood\, California\, garage. They did so based on two crucial elements: their common love for rock’s golden age (“Growing up loving the same music has always been the glue for the Bangles\,” says Susanna) and the crystalline sound they quite naturally created when they blended their voices (“The chemistry was there instantaneously. It just clicked\,” Debbi recalls). Legendary musical guru Rodney Bingenheimer gave the girls’ self-produced single ‘Getting Out Of Hand\,’ airplay\, and soon “The Bangs” were signed by Faulty Products\, a subsidiary of IRS Records. \nRenamed The Bangles\, the girls hit the road in ’82 opening for The English Beat\, and in the process got signed to Columbia Records. Former Runaways lead singer Michael Steele replaced Annette Zilinskas on bass\, and the Bangles began a steady climb to the top. \nThe band released their first full-length album\, All Over The Place in 1984\, with the singles ‘Hero Takes A Fall’ and ‘Going Down To Liverpool\,’ making a splash on college radio. \nOpening for Cyndi Lauper’s ‘84 tour exposed them to an ever-widening audience\, and helped their 1985 album\, Different Light make a huge impact. Featuring the hits ‘If She Knew What She Wants\,’ the Prince-penned ‘Manic Monday\,’ and the smash dance track ‘Walk Like An Egyptian\,’ the Bangles rocketed to superstardom. \n‘Egyptian’ charted at Billboard’s #1 for four weeks in a row – a feat no other all-female band had ever achieved. A smash national tour\, and awards including Single of The Year\, Best MTV Video Performance\, and a BMA helped solidify the band’s status. \nIn ’87\, the Bangles recorded a hard rocking cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘Hazy Shade Of Winter’ for the Less Than Zero soundtrack that rocketed to #2 on the charts. That summer found the band at the peak of its popularity\, and back on the road for the ‘Bitchen Summer’ international tour. In early 1988\, the Bangles released Everything\, with two more chart hits: the rocking ‘In Your Room\,’ and the seminal ballad ‘Eternal Flame\,’ which was a #1 hit internationally and has become a romantic classic\, performed recently on singing competitions “The Voice” and “American Idol.” \nDespite (or perhaps because of) their successes\, the band was exhausted\, tensions were high\, and in 1989 they decided to take an extended hiatus\, canceling the rest of their world tour. In 1990\, the Sony-released Greatest Hits broke sales records in Britain\, charting in the UK Top 10 for an incredible 97 weeks\, and peaking as the #4 album in the country. \nThe band members stayed in touch\, but serious talk about reforming the Bangles didn’t begin until Susanna’s husband\, award-winning director/producer Jay Roach\, needed an original song for his film\, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. \nIn 1999\, Vicki\, Susanna\, Michael\, and Debbi headed back into the studio to record ‘Get The Girl’ for the Austin Powers soundtrack\, and The Bangles formally announced their reunion in 2000. \nIn July 2003\, the Bangles proudly released the power-pop driven Doll Revolution\, their first studio album in over a decade. A fan and critical favorite\, Doll Revolution went to #23 on Billboard’s Top 100 Independent Albums for 2003\, with the single ‘Something That You Said’ going Top 40 in the UK and enjoying extensive airplay throughout Europe. Appearances on The Tonight Show and Graham Norton\, a smash Japan tour\, and sold out European and US Tour dates kept the band busy. In 2005\, longtime bassist Michael Steele elected to retire from the band\, but drummer Debbi Peterson\, and guitarists Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson continued performing and touring internationally. \nIn 2011 The Bangles produced their latest album\, SWEETHEART OF THE SUN\, which was recorded by Matthew Sweet and mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty\, Wilco). “We went into the album thinking we wanted to pay tribute to Los Angeles and the California music that we grew up with during the 1960s\,” says Susanna. “As we were finishing the record\,” says Vicki\, “we started to realize there was a unifying theme—paradise lost in Southern California\, the perception juxtaposed with the reality of it.” Susanna picks up the thought: “L.A. is like paradise—the sun shines 360 days a year\, the flowers are always in bloom—but meanwhile\, so many people are walking around alienated\, depressed and anxious.” SWEETHEART OF THE SUN reveals The Bangles at their equally beguiling extremes\, as soaring folk-rock harmonies coexist with adrenalized rave-ups inspired by the band’s roots in Nuggets-era garage rock. “We really started out as an indie band\, very simple grassroots. We didn’t have any money or publicity behind us — we were truly a garage band\,” says Susanna. \n2013 was a year in which The Bangles re-energized by getting back to the basics. They participated in the Paisley Underground Reunion show\, where they played with other Southern California bands from the same scene\, all of whom were influenced by the psychedelic movement of the 60’s. \nSo why are they still making music\, and still doing it together? After all\, each of them has a fulfilling life outside of the band. “I feel like I do it because I have to do it\,” says Vicki\, “but more importantly\, I want to do it – we all do. The writing and recording have become more enjoyable than ever. During the course of making this record\, we came up with a really nice working method that makes it doable for us and easy to fit in with other aspects of our lives.” Debbi adds: “I think it’s important for all of us to keep moving on and creating\, because that’s why we got into this in the first place.” \nRemarkably\, the Bangles’ second time around has lasted longer than the first\, as the three longtime partners harmoniously coexist with their respective husbands and children; making music together is now another familiar\, rewarding part of their lives. Much has changed in the lives and careers of Vicki\, Debbi and Susanna since that first time they played and sang together in the Hoffs family garage years ago. Ask Susanna\, and she’ll say\, “Where are the bangles in 2014? We’re back in the garage where we started!”
