SUMMARY:Culture Club
DESCRIPTION:Culture Club were one of the biggest pop bands of the 80s\, racking up seven straight Top 10 hits in the UK and nine Top 10 singles in the US. \nCentral to the band’s appeal was the flamboyant front man Boy George\, whose cross-dressing and heavy make-up created an image which was completely unique on the pop scene. George was also noted for his biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club media exposure on both sides of the Atlantic. \nAlthough they drew influence from the ‘New Romantic’ movement\, Culture Club was also inspired by the music and fashion of ‘Northern Soul’\, which helped to create a broader appeal. \nCulture Club grew out of the ashes of ‘Sex Gang Children’\, formed by George and bassist Mikey Craig. Drummer Jon Moss and guitarist Roy Hay came on board\, and by 1981 the band had been renamed. \nEarly in 1982 a deal was signed with Virgin Records\, but success eluded them until the release of their third single in the autumn\, the massive breakthrough hit ‘Do You Really Want To Hurt Me’. \nShortly after this Culture Club’s debut album ‘Kissing To Be Clever’\, climbed to No.5 on the UK charts\, while another non-album single ‘Time (Clock Of The Heart)’ reached No.3. \nThe band’s US success followed early in 1983 with the album and both singles riding high in the charts. A third single ‘I’ll Tumble 4 Ya’ was taken from the album in the US\, providing additional Top 10 success. \nBy the time their second album ‘Colour By Numbers’ was released in autumn 1983\, Culture Club were the most popular pop group in the world. ‘Colour By Numbers’ spawned ‘Karma Chameleon’ a transatlantic No.1\, which sold over five million copies worldwide. Meanwhile the album was kept off the US No.1 spot for six consecutive weeks by Michael Jackson’s record-breaking ‘Thriller’.

Their debut record\, Sports\, gained local traction and eventually\, in 2013\, online buzz started to pick up for their lo-fi songs\, which captured the awkwardness of teenagers surrounded by social media. The quartet remained at university while taking time out so they could to tour\, but that changed when they were offered a support slot with fellow Philly-based outfit the Wonder Years. They soon penned a deal with Run for Cover Records and returned to the studio to record their follow-up\, You’re Gonna Miss It All\, which appeared in 2014. An EP\, MOBO Presents: The Perfect Cast EP featuring Modern Baseball\, arrived in 2015 via Lame-O Records\, with Holy Ghost\, the band’s third studio long player\, slated to follow in May 2016. DESCRIPTION:If you ask the members of Balkan Beat Box to describe their sound you’ll get a different answer from each individual; you’ll also likely get a different answer from the individuals if you ask them the same question multiple times. This is partially because BBB’s contemporary cross-cultural musical polyglotism cavorts with many styles\, but this is also because the band doesn’t want to be tied to any one answer. They revel in the fact that their influences are worldwide and given equal value\, but this is no mere mash-up\, this is music made by citizens of a world culture. \nHailing from New York and Tel Aviv\, Balkan Beat Box (aka BBB) blend Balkan brass\, earth shattering bass\, hip-hop and dub electronics to exhilarating effect. Their live shows are explosive affairs\, with singer Tomer Yosef delivering his sometimes politicised lyrics with passionate performances always sending audiences into a frenzy. The result is an intoxicating and intense sonic assault which takes no prisoners and makes no apologies for its outspokenness. \nOri Kaplan\, Tamir Muskat\, and Tomer Yosef burst out of New York City’s underground in the mid-2000s introducing the world to their distinctive brand of music and setting BBB’s reputation as a formidable live act. They became a favorite of audiences and critics alike the world over. \nOver four albums the band have constantly explored new musical territory. They’ve visited the Balkan and Mediterranean diaspora of their namesake in 2005’s Balkan Beat Box\, 2007’s Nu Med\, the Far East with Blue Eyed Black Boy 2010\, and produced an exhilarating hybrid of electronic raga on Give 2012. The Independent has called them “deftly programmed global fusion” adding “a band I can’t wait to see live.” Give was widely celebrated in the press\, with Songlines saying: ‘BBB are as outspoken and uncompromising as ever. It’s hard to resist the album’s intensity’. \nRecently\, the band had an intense period of collaborating with other artists such as the Yemenite dance music group A-Wa who are currently hitting the festival circuit\, the turnt up rock group Loco Hot\, and writing with producers and songwriters around the world. DESCRIPTION:New York-born\, San Francisco-based Aesop Rock (aka Ian Bavitz) is a critically acclaimed hip hop artist/producer\, recognized for his dense and abstract word play. Between 1997-2007\, he released five solo albums\, three EPs\, and a 45-minute piece of music designed for runners\, commissioned by Nike. His lyrics have been published in the New York Times Best Seller Hip Hop Speaks to Children\, by author/activist Professor Nikki Giovanni (Oct. 2008)\, as well as Yale University’s Anthology of Rap (Nov. 2010). Aesop is also co-founder of 900bats.com\, a creative resource of arts\, information\, and oddities. \nSince the release of Aesop’s last solo album None Shall Pass (2007)\, Aesop toured the US extensively\, as well as Australia\, UK and Europe\, returning to an eclectic mix of collaborations\, landing him both behind the board and in front of the mic. He provided music for the short film Wallyball (Apr. 2008) for the McSweeney’s “Wholphin” short film series\, scored the Ace Norton-directed short film Dewana’s Bridal (Sep. 2009)\, produced the third installment of the Slug and Murs Felt series A Tribute to Rosie Perez (Nov. 2009)\, contributed both beats and vocals on Kimya Dawson’s album Thunder Thighs (Oct. 2011)\, created music in collaboration with Jeremy Fish’s “Ghosts of the Barbary Coast” art show in SF (2009)\, co-produced SF rock outfit Dirty Ghosts’ debut album Metal Moon\, (Feb. 2012)\, and started and recorded albums with two new groups – Hail Mary Mallon (with rapper Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz) and the Uncluded (with Kimya Dawson). Aesop also started his own imprint\, Block Block Chop\, which is now the home to his catalog. \nSkelethon marks the first entirely self-produced album for Aesop Rock\, with additional instrumentation and back-up vocals from the likes of Allyson Baker (Dirty Ghosts)\, Hanni El Khatib\, Nicky Fleming-Yaryan\, Rob Sonic\, and the Grimace Federation\, as well as scratch performances provided by long-time friend and collaborator DJ Big Wiz. \nStarting off by touching on the death of a close friend in 2008\, subject matter wades through subsequent losses\, jostled memories\, relationships gone awry\, and the occasionally amusing\, if futile\, attempts we make to cope with these things. There is light humor in the darkest corners\, juxtaposed with pitch black in the jokes. With Kimya Dawson as its sole vocal collaborator\, Skelethon is packed with Aesop’s unique handle on interweaving imagery and urgency together in what will surely prove to be the centerpiece of his catalog thus far.

DESCRIPTION:When Todd Snider decided it was time to work with musicians his own age for a change\, he ended up forming an all-star group of jam band and alt-country veterans known as the Hard Working Americans. In 2012\, after Snider had wrapped up touring behind his album Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables\, he had a conversation with his friend Chad Staehly\, keyboard man with the group Great American Taxi\, about his working methods. “One day Chad Staehly pointed out to me that I spend a lot of time with my heroes and avoid my peers\,” Snider told reporter Jonathan Bernstein. “He was like\, ‘I always see you with Jerry Jeff (Walker)\, or John Prine\, or Kris Kristofferson. Who do you like that’s your age?'” With that in mind\, for his next project Snider put together a band of like-minded musicians of similar vintage\, including Staehly on keys\, guitarist Neal Casal (of the Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Ryan Adams & the Cardinals)\, bassist Dave Schools (of Widespread Panic)\, and drummer Duane Trucks (of King Lincoln and Col. Bruce Hampton’s School of Music). The new group adopted the name the Hard Working Americans\, and despite Snider’s pedigree as a songwriter\, for their debut album they recorded a set of cover tunes about the frustrations of working life. The band made its live debut in December 2013 at a benefit concert in Denver\, Colorado. The Hard Working Americans was released in early 2014\, followed by a short tour.
