Our 38th season comes to a mighty close with the R&B diva ANDRA DAY, a superstar in the making who sings with “Eartha Kitt’s unflappable confidence, Amy Winehouse’s effortless grasp of classic jazz, Billie Holiday’s access to raw emotion, and Adele’s range and pop sensibility.” (NPR) Day has been in good company since her cover of cover of Jessie J’s Mamma Knows Best became a YouTube sensation and caught the ear of Warner Bros.: her debut studio album, Cheers to the Fall, released in August 2015, was produced by Adrian Gurvitz and Raphael Saadiq, and featured Questlove, James Poyser of The Roots, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and The Dap-Kings. Her duet with Stevie Wonder in an Apple commercial capped off the year, and then Spike Lee, after seeing her perform at Sundance Film Festival, directed her video for Forever Mine, the record’s first single. The night begins with SON LITTLE, a Philadelphia bluesman/nu soul innovator who “doesn’t strive to reproduce his influences; he recombines them into something new.” (NPR) Little first gained notice through collaborations with The Roots and electronic producer RJD2. “But on his own, he builds an idiosyncratic musical world from the ground up.” (NPR)
