Event Review: Milky Chance’s Sold Out Show at Webster Hall

[mashshare]

Last night, Milky Chance played at Webster Hall to a sold out crowd. Best known for their single, “Stolen Dance,” the German duo redefines what it means to be a folk band. Their music has psychedelic, electronic and reggae influences. Their music kind of rolls over the listener and the beats go through the body, making it almost impossible to not do, at the very least, a little dancing while listening.

James Hersey opened for Milky Chance. Without even a Wikipedia page to his name, Hersey still had many fans in the audience and made many more that night. Hersey has a very smooth and sensual sound. It’s reminiscent of John Mayer, but less soft rock and more groove. Signed to Milky Chance’s label, Lichtdicht Records, Hersey has just released an album, titled Clarity, which you can grab here.

Milky Chance came on next and the crowd got a little crazy. After the intro, they played “Stunner.” With only one album, they played Sadnecessary in its entirety (but not in order). Clemens Rehbein, vocals and instrumentals, has a very endearing stage presence. He gets into the groove of the music and infuses the music with emotion. Philipp Dausch, DJing, sticks to the background, but he gives the songs a dancey quality that turned Webster Hall into a dance club. Also a part of the set were “Nevermind” and “Given” (not on the album). Not many bands can say that the way they sound on recordings is equivalent to how they sound live. Both Milky Chance and James Hersey sound as great live and on their albums (if not better).
