Shaun the Sheep Movie is the latest from Aardman studios, creators of Wallace & Gromit. Shaun is an unusually bright sheep living on Mossy Bottom Farm with his sheep friends and Blitzer the dog. Every day is the same with the Farmer waking up each morning and going through the list of daily chores. One day Shaun gets the brilliant idea that the sheep deserve a day off and what happens is a domino effect of mishaps and adventures.

Everything about the film is stand out. Its plot, characters, humor, animation style are brilliant. While it may feel the film is slow to start, it is totally worth any wait endured. The plot manages to make no sense while still forming a cohesive path from beginning to end. It’s the type of movie that can be enjoyed on the surface or at a deeper level (those tend to be the best kind). It’s a feel good movie that’s a nice deviation from the flashy summer blockbusters. And the end credits include a fun song featuring the U.K. rap group the Rizzle Kicks.

There is something enchanting about the wordless of the film. The only words uttered are those through song. Despite the lack of dialogue all the humor and emotion is communicated so expertly that adults, children and those in between do not miss out on anything. Shaun the Sheep Movie is funny, clever and appeals to all ages. With the films of Studio Laika making such an imprint, stop-motion is making a comeback. Aardman has been stop-motioning for years at a high-level of excellence.
